OPERATION MINCEMEAT - The man who never was and the deception that helped win Sicilyshort descriptive sentence

TALK SYNOPSIS

In 1943, Allied planners faced a formidable problem: how could they persuade Hitler that the imminent invasion of Sicily was really aimed elsewhere?

Their answer was one of the Second World War’s boldest intelligence operations. A dead man was given a new identity—Major William Martin, Royal Marines—then placed in the sea off the coast of Spain carrying apparently secret Allied papers. The documents suggested that Greece and Sardinia, rather than Sicily, were the real targets.

This talk tells the extraordinary true story of Operation Mincemeat: the imaginative intelligence officers behind the plan, the carefully constructed life of “Major Martin”, and the complex chain of events that persuaded German leaders to divert forces away from Sicily. It also examines the ethical ambiguities of the operation, the real identity of the man whose body was used, and the distinction between the historical record and the later films, books and popular legend.

A tale of espionage, deception and human ingenuity, Operation Mincemeat reveals how a carefully planted story helped shape a major Allied campaign.
