From Frontline to Base Hospital

An exproration of casualty care in the First World War from point of wounding to Base hospital.

TALK SYNOPSIS

Behind the casualty figurees from the First World War lies a remarkable story of rescue, treatment and evacuation.

This talk follows the journey of a soldier from the point of wounding on the battlefield, through the successive stages of the military medical system, to a base hospital safely behind the lines. It explores the work of stretcher-bearers, regimental medical officers, the Royal Army Medical Corps, nurses, ambulance drivers and the many others who cared for the wounded—often under fire and in extraordinarily difficult conditions.

Drawing upon personal accounts and contemporary images, the talk explains how casualties were collected, assessed, treated and transported through dressing stations, casualty clearing stations and ambulance trains. It also examines how the unprecedented scale and nature of industrial warfare drove important advances in surgery, infection control, blood transfusion and trauma care.
