Follow the story to where it happened

A bespoke battlefield visit connects people, units and military events with the ground on which their stories unfolded. So, What happened? can research, plan and guide a personalised visit shaped around the history that matters to you.

Your interests. Your journey. Their story.

You may want to follow the wartime service of a relative, understand the experience of a particular regiment or revisit the ground associated with a significant campaign. Rather than joining a standard itinerary, you can commission a visit designed around your own questions, interests and available time.

The result is a more personal journey: one that connects surviving evidence with the landscape and places individual experience at the heart of the wider history.

A visit might be developed around:

  • A relative’s military history

  • A regiment, battalion or other unit

  • A particular battle or campaign

  • A grave, memorial or place of commemoration

  • A group’s shared military connection

  • A wider interest in First or Second World War history

From the service record to the battlefield

A name, service number or unit can provide the starting point for a much more personal visit. Where evidence survives, military research can help establish where an individual served, the formation to which they belonged and the events in which their unit was involved.

Those findings can then shape an itinerary connecting records, war diaries and campaign history with the actual locations associated with the story. Research can be commissioned separately or incorporated into the preparation for a battlefield visit.
