TALK SYNOPSIS

Britain, Great Britain, the United Kingdom, England — what exactly is the difference? This engaging journey through 2,000 years of history explores how these islands became the United Kingdom. From Romans and Vikings to 1066, Welsh castles, Robert the Bruce and the Acts of Union, we discover how invasion, ambition, geography and politics repeatedly changed the map. Along the way, familiar places reveal unexpected stories and the distinct identities of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland emerge. A fascinating introduction to the history of Britain — and why defining Britain is rather more complicated than it first appears.

WHAT THE AUDIENCE WILL DISCOVER

In this talk, the audience will discover:

•The difference between the British Isles, Great Britain and the United Kingdom, and look at the history that formed them.

• Key moments in the development of modern Britain

• The historical relationships between England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, how they came about and the ongoing tensions.

• How Britian has changed over timed continues to do so as the union of nations develops, grows and occasionally disagrees.

Graeme MacPherson is an accredited Member of the Institute of Battlefield Guides, a Commonwealth War Graves Commission volunteer speaker and an Army officer with more than 40 years’ military experience. He combines careful research with accessible, engaging stories about the people and places behind historical events.
