OPERATION BLACK BUCK - Vulcans to the Falklands
short descriptive sentence
TALK SYNOPSIS
In April 1982, Britain faced the urgent challenge of responding to Argentina’s invasion of the Falkland Islands—8,000 miles from the UK. Among the most dramatic elements of the campaign was Operation Black Buck: a series of extraordinarily long-range bombing missions flown by ageing RAF Vulcan bombers.
Taking off from Ascension Island in the mid-Atlantic, Vulcan crews flew thousands of miles across the South Atlantic to attack targets around Port Stanley. The missions demanded a remarkable airborne refuelling operation, involving Victor tanker aircraft repeatedly refuelling one another as well as the bombers. At the time, they were among the longest bombing raids ever attempted.
This talk explores the planning, technology and people behind Operation Black Buck. It considers what the raids achieved militarily, their strategic and political significance, and the risks taken by the aircrews. It also separates the familiar legend of the Vulcan from the more complicated reality: were these spectacular missions decisive, symbolic, or both?
A story of Cold War aircraft, logistical ingenuity and extraordinary endurance, Operation Black Buck offers a compelling perspective on the Falklands War and the limits of air power.
