THEME: - GENERAL HISTORY
A brief history of the Falkland Islands
Reviewing over 450 years of history that have shaped these remote South Atlantic Islands.
TALK SYNOPSIS
Remote, windswept and often viewed primarily through the events of 1982, the Falkland Islands possess a much longer and richer history.
Spanning some 450 years, this talk traces the Islands’ story from the voyages of the earliest European explorers and the arrival of the first settlers to the development of Stanley and a distinctive island community. It explores how geography, maritime trade, farming, international rivalry and conflict have all shaped the Falklands and their people.
Along the way, the talk considers the competing British, French, Spanish and Argentine connections to the Islands; their strategic importance in the South Atlantic; and their role in both world wars. It concludes by examining the transformative impact of the 1982 conflict and the development of the modern Falkland Islands.
